County Commissioner 1986; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1988; reelected in 1994 and 2000, and served from January 3, 1989, to January 3, 2007; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 2006; was a resident of Billings, Mont., until his death on April 28, 2016.
