University of Kentucky, Lexington, Ky.; J.D., University of Kentucky,
Lexington, Ky.; lawyer, private practice; elected Kentucky state auditor,
1991-1995; elected attorney general for the State of Kentucky, 1995-2003;
unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Kentucky in 2003; elected as a Democrat
to the One Hundred Eighth Congress in a special election to fill the vacancy
caused by the resignation of United States Representative Ernie Fletcher and
reelected to five succeeding Congresses (February 17, 2004-January 3, 2013);
unsuccessful candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress in
2012.
