1957-1960; special assistant attorney general, Missouri state attorney general,
1961-1963; member of the Missouri state senate, 1971-1977; elected as a
Democrat to the Ninety-fifth and to the sixteen succeeding Congresses (January
3, 1977-January 3, 2011); chair, Committee on Armed Services (One Hundred Tenth
and One Hundred Eleventh Congresses); unsuccessful candidate for reelection to
the One Hundred Twelfth Congress in 2010; died in Arlington, Va., October 28,
2013.
