WALDIE, Jerome Russell, a Representative from California; born in Antioch, Calif., February
15, 1925; attended Antioch public schools; graduated from University of
California, 1950; graduated from University of California School of Law, Boalt,
Calif., 1953; United States Army, 1943-1946; member of California state
assembly, 1959-1966, majority leader, 1961-1966; elected as a Democrat by
special election to the Eighty-ninth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the
death of United States Representative John F. Baldwin; reelected to the four
succeeding Congresses (June 7, 1966-January 3, 1975); was not a candidate for
reelection to the Ninety-fourth Congress in 1974, but was an unsuccessful
candidate for the Democratic nomination for Governor of California in 1974;
public advocate; chairman, Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission,
1978-1979; executive director, White House Conference on Aging, 1980; member,
California Agricultural Relations Board, 1981-1985; died on April 3, 2009, in
Placerville, Calif.
