The 116th Congress (2019-2020) took the first steps to enter the green generation with the resolution H.Res.109. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is the sponsor and central figure for the lofty idea of the Green New Deal.

Calls for Creation

Rep. Cortez is creating a stir in the House with her ideas. While some see the creation of a deficit, others see the overall design of the Green New Deal and the resolution to recognize it as the answer to climate change and socioeconomic issues. The issues alone are polarizing, and the Green New Deal creates a more massive divide.

The goals of the Green New Deal resolution calls for the following:

  • Net zero greenhouse gas emissions
  • substantial investment in industry and infrastructure
  • The promotion of equality and justice for all
  • Ensuring security in the economy while creating high paying jobs
  • Healthy food regulation, access to nature without creating damage, securing clean water and air, climate resilience, and sustaining the environment for all

Ten-Year Plan

H.Res.109’s (Recognizing the duty of the Federal Government to create a Green New Deal) goal is to see the effort put into the projects over ten years.

Specific projects and goals:

  • Consumers do not always have the option to reduce the amount of power they use from any given power grid. The creation and construction of smart power grids would allow customers to decide for themselves how much energy they want to use.
  • The infrastructure plan attached to the Green New Deal has a basis in upgrading existing structures to maximize water and energy usage. The project would then allow for new buildings, to begin with, the same energy efficiency.
  • Transportation and agriculture create a vast amount of greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. The gradual removal of the emissions would carry over ten years.
  • Existing hazardous waste and abandoned industry remain an issue. The Green New Deal would put forth the workforce and funds to clean the waste.
  • Unfair competition keeps high wage jobs from the American public. H.Res.109 recognizes the fact and focuses on freeing business people, small and large, from the unjust practices.
  • Safe, affordable housing has taken a hit over the years and homelessness is still high in the United States. The resolution recognizes the need for affordable higher education, affordable housing, affordable and quality healthcare, and overall wage equality.

The Green New Deal and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) are both divisive subjects in their own right. Together, she is making her mark with the Resolution, as the sole sponsor. Where it goes from here is anyone's guess.
