A BILL 
To require the Secretary of Defense to seek to enter into 

an agreement with the National Academies of Sciences, 
Engineering, and Medicine to study and report on the 
incidence of cancer diagnosis and mortality among pilots 
in the uniformed services, and for other purposes. 

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representa-1

tives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, 2

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE. 3

This Act may be cited as the ‘‘Military Pilots Cancer 4

Incidence Study Act’’. 5

SEC. 2. STUDY ON INCIDENCE OF CANCER DIAGNOSIS AND 1

MORTALITY AMONG PILOTS IN THE UNI-2

FORMED SERVICES. 3

(a) IN GENERAL.—Not later than 60 days after the 4

date of the enactment of this section, the Secretary of De-5

fense shall seek to enter into an agreement with the Na-6

tional Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine 7

under which the National Academies of Sciences, Engi-8

neering, and Medicine shall— 9

(1) conduct a study— 10

(A) to determine the incidence of cancer 11

diagnosis and mortality among members, and 12

former members, of the uniformed services who 13

serve as pilots compared to such members who 14

do not serve as pilots, including by determining 15

such incidence based on gender, age, flying 16

hours, uniformed services, and type of aircraft; 17

and 18

(B) to determine the appropriate age to 19

begin screening such members for cancer, in-20

cluding by determining such age based on gen-21

der, flying hours, uniformed services, and type 22

of aircraft; and 23

(2) not later than one year after the date the 24

Secretary enters into such agreement, submit a re-25

port to the Committees on Armed Services and Vet-26

(b) DEFINITIONS.—In this section: 4

(1) The term ‘‘pilot’’ includes an individual who 5

frequently accompanies a pilot in a cockpit, such as 6

a navigator or maintenance personnel. 7

(2) The term ‘‘uniformed services’’ has the 8

meaning given such term in section 101 of title 37, 9

United States Code. 10
